Older homes have charm and a lived in feeling but there is something about a newly built home that draws me every time. There is that smell of freshly painted walls, new wiring and plumbing that are a plus to me. A new house is like an empty canvas that I can work with. Old homes tend to have structures and lines already in place. They also tend to need more work done to them. Which do you prefer?

Older homes do have charm, especially when they are well cared for and maintained. Friends of ours have an alder early 1900s farmhouse that they remodelled inside. They kept the farm kitchen the same but with a few upgrades. Everything else was redone with new insulation and flooring.

We lived in an old home. It was built in 1938 by a farmer who owned quite a bit of land around us. The land was split for other homes and we bought the old house. We sunk a lot of money into that house over the years. Like your friends, the walls had very little insulation and one small bathroom for four people. We added another bathroom, as well as an extension to the house as it was too small for our family. I love the look of old homes but don't want to own one again.

Well-cared old houses are so charming. There is a sense of pride in living with something that withstand the passage of time, though we do need to repair or renovate a few things here and there. Sometimes it feels like I'm entering someone else's life and privacy, and it can bring a kind of uncomfortable feeling.

I particularly do not like the smell of paint in a new house though I would still prefer a new house to an old one, even though the latter can also be an option if it is a house that has been taken care of well. We lived in an old house for a very long time and we still go back there once in a while since my parents decided they were not going to sell it, despite a lot of bids.

If I have to go for an old one, there has to be value for money. It definitely costs more to purchase a new home.
